Newry Chamber of Commerce
Newry Chamber of Commerce was established in 1892. From its origins the Chamber has strived to promote the Commercial, Manufacturing Shipping and Carrying interests of the Town and Port of Newry and surrounding districts as well as petition Parliament on any matter affecting the Trade of the Country.
Newry Chamber of Trade
In 1978 retailers and local businessmen in Newry decided to form a Chamber of Trade. This new Chamber focused on the specific interests of retailers and was influential in attracting new retail businesses to Newry.
Newry Chamber of Commerce and Trade
Both Chambers merged to form Newry Chamber of Commerce and Trade on the 23 October 2001. This amalgamation formed as realisation that members and the local economy would be best served by a strong joint Chamber.
Newry City
Working in partnership with the public sector through Newry Town Management, the Chamber was an instrumental factor in Newry's successful bid for city status, awarded on the 14 March 2002. Representatives from the Chamber travelled far and wide and hosted many events in the application bid for City status.
Newry City Centre Management
Formed after City Status was awarded the Newry City Centre Management, a partnership between public, private, voluntary and community sectors to secure future economic and social development of Newry City. The Chamber is a key player in this partnership with several Executive Members sitting on the Management Board.
Euro Friendly Zone
Within months of the Euro being introduced to Republic of Ireland economy Newry and Mourne was the first district in the UK to become a Euro Friendly Zone, setting the precedent for all to follow. It is now believed that around 35% of weekly trade is in Euro. From the outset the Newry Chamber recognised the potential of becoming Euro Friendly and successfully lobbied for its introduction.
Newry & Dundalk Joint Chamber Forum
With just 13 miles separating Newry and Dundalk and sitting on opposite sides of the Border, from an economic and business development perspective, these two areas have developed back-to-back, resulting in each area's natural economic and business hinterland having been cut off.
The Newry Dundalk Joint Chamber Forum was established in June 2003 as a strategic framework to address and improve the economic and social profile of the region through capitalising on Peace and Reconciliation. The Forum aims to examine areas of joint co-operation between the Chambers of Commerce of Dundalk and Newry, which will promote the economic and social development of the region. It is expected that the outputs of the Forum will result in business development for SME's, increased employment, improved image / profile of the area and increased inward investment.
